Shame is a natural human emotion. We experience the feeling of shame when we violate the social norms which we believe in, something which we will all experience at some point in our lives. However, psychotherapist Liat Kaye MSEd, MSc, MBPsS explains that living with chronic shame can be damaging to our overall wellbeing and mental health. Unresolved shame can lead to feelings of depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem.

Those who experience mental health issues such as body dysmorphic disorder, addiction or disordered eating, may also experience shame as a symptom.
