The current situation the world has found itself in during the COVID-19 pandemic is one of uncertainty. With jobs cancelled or simple luxuries we take for granted like going to the gym taken away, we can still find some calm and control in our own actions.

1. Still Keep It Varied

As the government closure of gyms has swept the UK and further afield, many trainers and classes have made the switch to online making the idea of a home workout not as daunting as first thought. The key is to remember that you don’t need to live stream 7 HIIT workouts a week.

External stresses will already be impacting your body and thought process so adding in intense workouts every day will probably do more damage than good. Strip that number of HIIT sessions back and look to incorporate more soothing options like yoga, breath work or stretching. At the moment of writing this article, the government are still encouraging movement outdoors as long as social distancing is taken into account. Clear the head and connect with nature by running in a clear and open environment.

2. Routine Is Key

As much as you can keep your routine. Habitual changes make it even harder to maintain momentum, so if you exercise in the morning, try and keep doing that. Have a look at your current diary and block out times to exercise. This is to make sure you’re giving yourself structure and not falling into the trap of hitting the snooze button.

3. Recalibrate Your Goals

It’s worth taking a step back and looking at what goals you could achieve over the coming months. It could be there are certain skills you want to crack like the handstand, or increasing your flexibility. Think of this period as a chance to level up. Social distance yourself and spend that time making yourself better.

4. Understand That You Need To Keep Your Mind Active Too

As well as physical exercise, look at what you can do to keep the mental side ticking over too. The tip is infinitely scrolling social feeds isn’t the way to do it. Read books or download audiobooks / podcasts. Start some self reflection and journal your thoughts. Even learn a language, anything that will give your brain mental simulation.

Including these tips into your thought process will help to bring structure and balance during this crazy global moments we are facing.
